The Abyss. Hell. Gehenna.

  1. DieHard GameFan said that 'more than the previous 5e campaigns, Out of the Abyss' success really depends on the organization, storytelling and improvisational skills of the DM. This is a fantastic piece and one of the best campaigns D&D has had in at least ten (possibly twenty) years. You just have to be willing to do a lot of work to make it.
  2. 2 Comments on D&D Encounters: Out of the Abyss (Session 4.1) The party was still recovering after seeing the Demon Lord, Demogorgon, with their own eyes. Somehow Demogorgon was lose in the Underdark.

The setup of Out of tile Abyss is such that the wear iron lave collars along with manacles connected characters need haw no connections with events in the ro iron be-lt by a short length of dlain. This leaves Underdark. Or wilh each other. Prior to the stan of the the pr1soners restrained, but clot.sn't affect their ad enture.

The rest of the original design team is also stellar: Aaron Loeb (Book of the Righteous), Erik Mona (Paizo Publishing), and Chris Pramas (AD&D Guide to Hell).

TheBook of Fiends provides profoundly evil foes your players will never forget. Level Ups (AKA stretch goals) will add new Player Character options, tie-in fiction, and more.

The core of the book (all the background and all the monsters) is written and edited already, and layout and art direction has already begun. Backers at appropriate levels will receive a work-in-progress PDF after the close of the campaign, so you can get the evil in your game as soon as possible.

Check out some sample monsters and page layouts here and then look at the Reward Levels below to see your options.

Important Notes!

Three important notes about this campaign:

First, you will be charged right away when you back the project. This campaign is not like other crowdfunders that charge you at the end. If you need to modify your pledge later, you can do that.

Second, we will be charging shipping later. Right now, you just need to pay for the basic cost of your chosen Reward Level. When we get closer to delivery, you'll have to come back to Game On Tabletop to pay for the shipping. You will get emails prompting you to do so so this is nothing you need to track. We will be charging standard postal rates to ship from the United States using the least expensive shipping options available. Nevertheless, we do not set or control shipping costs, particularly to non-US addresses.

Third, PDF rewards will be delivered via DriveThruRPG. The nice thing about this is the book then becomes part of your library and you can re-download it any time you want.

The Full Story

TheBook of Fiends originally came out in 2003. It was a huge hit for Green Ronin and won an ENnie Award to boot, but the full story begins 5 years earlier.

Back in 1998, Chris Pramas was working as a game designer in the TSR Product Group at Wizards of the Coast. His first big assignment was the Guide to Hell for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition, which came out the following year. In 2000 Pramas decided to start a side company and so Green Ronin was born. The company was one of the first to take advantage of the Open Game License to create D&D compatible material, and it scored big with the Freeport Trilogy, a series of adventures that introduced the “City of Adventure” to GMs the world over.

In 2001 Pramas wrote Legions of Hell, a d20 monster book full of devils that was the spiritual successor to the Guide to Hell. In 2002 Green Ronin published a sequel, Armies of the Abyss, that gave demons the same treatment. Its author was Greyhawk savant and future Paizo publisher Erik Mona. A third book in the series, Hordes of Gehenna, was planned but when D&D moved from 3rd edition to 3.5, the decision was made to release one big tome, TheBook of Fiends, that included Hordes of Gehenna and 3.5 updated versions of Legions of Hell and Armies of the Abyss. Hordes of Gehenna built on the cosmology Aaron Loeb had designed in The Book of the Righteous and he and Robert J. Schwalb worked together to bring the daemons to life. Rob also served as developer for the Book of Fiends.

20th Anniversary!

This year is Green Ronin’s 20th anniversary and while we hoped for a more festive atmosphere than a global pandemic, we are still doing our best to celebrate. In 2015, Green Ronin, in cooperation with Wizards of the Coast, produced Out of the Abyss, featuring many of the game’s infamous demon lords. Several years ago, we did a Fifth Edition version of the The Book of the Righteous, and that was very well-received. When we looked at other classic Green Ronin products we could revisit for our 20th anniversary, The Book of Fiends topped the list. For starters, it’d be great to see those demons, devils, and daemons in glorious full color! With 5E going from strength to strength right now, it also seemed a perfect book for that growing community.

When Rob Schwalb agreed to do the design work, we knew it was meant to be.

Green Ronin has been in business for 20 years and RPGs are our bread and butter. If there's one thing we know how to do, it's make RPGs! The Book of Fiends is written, edited, and in a rough layout. At this point it's a matter of adding any extra material unlocked by Level Ups, commissioning the remaining art, and finishing the graphic design and layout. These are not trivial tasks but they are comfortably in our wheelhouse.

Dnd 5e Out Of The Abyss Pdf

The risk this project has that our previous crowdfunders didn’t need to worry about is the aforementioned global pandemic. The whole publishing chain is currently disrupted, and everyone is trying to adjust. We believe that by the time The Book of Fiends is ready to go to print, there will be enough printing and shipping capacity that we can fulfil it, but of course, we can’t know for sure. It is possible the arc of the coronavirus will cause delays on the printed book. If you have any concerns at all, just back at the PDF only level. Delivering that we have no doubts about.
